Activities of the Board

The main aim of the Irrigation Board is to continue providing the services delivered previously by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry that entail the following:

  1. Administration
The offices of Loskop Irrigation Board are located at Klipbank B237 right opposite Aquaville ±4km from Groblersdal.  All administrative tasks are handled by a personnel corps. The majority of the functions performed are computerised.
  2. Water Distribution
Water is distributed on a request system. The Scheme is divided into 8 wards. Two main canals, namely the left- and right bank, provide water to the different wards and from there water is distributed in turn to the properties. The aim of the water distribution is to make water available at a specific time for a predetermined period of time at a fixed flow rate to a certain point to the best advantage of the community, namely the irrigators.
  3. Maintenance and Construction
As can be derived from the above, continuous maintenance and repair work to the structure and canals have to be done. For this purpose there is currently a maintenance division that is tasked with the construction and maintenance. To explain, the following:
    • Re-outlining of canals due to the changing ground formations
    • Re-covering of existing canals which no longer meet the requirements set due to erosion
    • Replacement of structures that no longer provide water accurately due to erosion and wear
    • Maintenance of flow banks protecting canal systems from flood water
    • Additional works as are necessary from time to time
  4. Work Shop
All maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles are undertaken by the Board's own personnel.  The fleet consist of 14 light vehicles, 10 motorcycles and 25 heavy vehicles and machines.
  5. Personnel
A personnel corps of 66 employees exist.  At the control of affairs is a General Manager who manages 4 divisions. He is directly responsible to the Board.  Above mentioned divisions each have their own manager and personnel. All water assigned to the Board for distribution is done so by the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry. The Board reports to the irrigators and is also responsible for its conduct to the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry.   The Board works in close relationship with the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.
